Katherine Roy’s (’10) first book was Neighborhood Sharks. Her next book, How to Be an Elephant: Growing up in the African Wild, is due out in September 2017 through Roaring Book Press.
Katherine did swaths of research for this wonderful book. In addition to book learnin’, she made a trip to Africa to study real elephants! She was able to talk directly with wild elephant experts, who also took her to see the wild elephants.
In the middle of creating her book, Katherine also gave birth to her own little one. As she writes in her blog, the experience added a whole new layer of depth to the story about a baby elephant and her mother.
You can read more about her process on her blog. Some posts of particular interest:
Next up we can look forward to Making More, a book about reproductive biology in the natural world.
