Thirteen years ago, one would-be writer Ian Ally-Seals met a young drawing fiend named Carl Mefferd (CCS ’11). They came up with an epic tale of a “colossal, steam-powered ship captained by an eccentric scientist.” With his constant companion, Edward the dog (not an epithet but a fact), one Captain Fowler would face new lands, sea beasts and the endless, glassy surface of the sea. Ally-Seals made a gentleman’s agreement that if Carl became a good artist, they’d make the comic a reality.

Zoom forward thirteen years and one MFA degree from the The Center for Cartoon Studies later, Carl is not only a good artist but a GREAT one. Quick, deft and resourceful, Carl Mefferd earned his drawing chops as a caricature artist at Six Flags, many a wedding, family reunion, company picnic and graduation night.
Cover of the graphic novel, Dr. Atlantis
Mefferd and Ally-Seals met up again, skills honed and ready to set sail in the inky black water of comics. And that is how Dr. Atlantis was born with some help from Nurses Kickstarter and Nurse Rare Earth Comics! After burying three issues like treasure on the beach, the creators decided to combine them into a graphic novel now available for $9.99.

Think you’ll be stranded on the spit over this graphic novel comes out? Never! Mefferd and Ally-Seals are already hard at work triangulating the fates and destination of the next Dr. Atlantis adventure.
